Fire, Drunk Boxing, a Mechanical Bull and a Home Cooked Meal

Phi Phi and Krabi, Thailand: 12-14th December

Today I woke up well rested, the guy with the tummy issues was a little quieter last night so I was actually able to get some sleep which is good because today we are heading to Phi Phi Island a place renowned for partying so not conducive to a good night’s sleep. I wake up before we need to check out so spend the start of my morning in our hostel lobby with a lovely cup of Earl Grey. Once I had finished my cuppa Alex, Jon, Bee and I head to a local KFC for breakfast. Bee has an urge and to be honest all of us are ready for some shitty western food at this point, so agree. After we have finished our KFC’s we head back to the hostel for our pre-arranged ride to the port. Our pick up is late and only has us marked down as one passenger but after a few phone calls from our hostel it all gets sorted and we are on our way. We are dropped at the port and board yet another boat to Phi Phi. Once there we decide to walk to our hostel, the town being about a twenty minute walk from one side to the other. As we arrive, guess who we see sitting outside the accommodation next door: Louis, we knew him and Charlotte were coming to Phi Phi at the same time as us and that their accommodation was next to ours from our night out in Phuket, but it was still a nice surprise to see him; it was as if he was waiting for us! After a quick chat the boys and I check in and take it in turns to shower and get ready.

Now all fresh we meet up with Char and Louis and head out to dinner and a cocktail or two in the middle of town. As we finish our meals we are joined by Hayden and Jess from our last tour. They are on the Island too and we all decide to go on a night out together. As the boys and I are only on the island for a single night we decide to make the most of it so we start the night by going to see the fire performers on the beach. We don’t want to pay the clubs exorbitant prices so rather than sitting, we enjoy a cold store beer while standing on the beach and watching the show.

I wake up the next day excited for what we have planned. The boys and I are going to Krabi and we have booked a place away from the normal tourist attractions. We are planning on having a couple days just chilling and as such have booked ourselves a whole apartment to ourselves. So once up we pack our stuff, check out and head back to the port. First we stop of for breakfast and unfortunately pick possibly the worst café I have ever been too. All of our food comes out cold, one dish with an egg that is not even cooked fully, the staff are rude and when we ask for hot food they clearly just chuck it in the microwave it was rubbish. Anyway we head to the port all feeling like that one day is enough to pretty much experience all of Phi Phi, and are ready for a couple of restful days. Once we arrive at Krabi we walk along the pier and are harassed by multiple taxi drivers, luckily we are used to this by now and after a little walk and a failed attempt at a Grab we negotiate with a driver to get us to town. Once there we are all really impressed with the apartment and settle in. The guys kindly give me the double room while they share a room with three singles. Once settled we head to a local supermarket as, for the first time in months, tonight I am having a home cooked meal. We do a little shopping around and decide on pasta. Alex is cooking which, something I know from my time in the US with him, means we are in for a treat. The boys and I enjoy a relaxed movie night with wine and pasta. It is lovely to relax after what feels like being on the go non-stop for months on end. The only thing that breaks my peace is a photo put into our tour group chat by Louis, of me on the mechanical bull, tan lines on show for the world to see. Now sober it doesn’t seem like such a good idea but hey, it was fun while I did it, and its something ticked off the bucket list. So I head to bed with my head held high and my belly fill of pasta and wine, not a bad way to end a day.

Once the beers are drunk and we have had enough of the pyrotechnics we head to the next bar; this one’s USP is that it is basically a Muay Thai ring with seating around. And, as well as professional fighters, drunk tourists can sign up to fight each other for a free bucket of alcohol each. It is fun to watch an array of different fighters try it out – from friends having fun to men that seem to be taking it a bit too serious. After we have had enough of the fights and a few buckets we head to another club known for having a mechanical bull to ride. Once there I see a sign that anyone who does it naked gets a bucket for free, so I am in. It is only after I have started stripping off the worker changes the rules on me and says I have to last 90 seconds to get the bucket, but hey, I’m committed now and I am getting that bucket! I last 112 seconds and get my free drink. After that I don’t remember most of the night but I am sure it was fun.
